  9. To view Readme.txt on screen in Notepad, maximize the Notepad window.
  10. To print Readme.txt, open it in Notepad or another word processor,
  11. then use the Print command on the File menu.

  22. Additional setup information is available in Setup.txt. You can view
  23. Setup.txt using Notepad with Windows 3.1. You can find the file on
  24. Windows 95 installation disk 1. If you purchased Windows 95 on a CD-ROM,
  25. you can find Setup.txt in the \Win95 directory.
  26. LIST OF WINDOWS 95 README FILES
  27. ===============================
  28. In addition to Readme.txt, Windows 95 provides the following readme
  29. files:
  30. Config.txt Contains syntax information for commands you use
  31. with your Config.sys file.
  32. Display.txt Provides information about how to configure
  33. and correct problems for available drivers
  34. and how to obtain additional display drivers.
  35. Exchange.txt Provides information to help you set up and
  36. run Microsoft Exchange.
  37. Extra.txt Provides information about where to find
  38. additional Windows 95 files, such as updates
  39. and drivers, in addition to files available
  40. only in the CD-ROM version of Windows 95.
  41. Faq.txt Answers frequently asked questions about
  42. Windows 95.
  43. General.txt Provides information about startup problems,
  44. the programs that come with Windows 95, disk
  45. tools, disks and CDs, drivers, removable media,
  46. Microsoft FAX, and pen services.
  47. This file also contains last-minute information
  48. received too late to include in the other readme
  49. files. For example, if you have a question about
  50. a printer, it would be helpful to look in
  51. General.txt as well as in Printers.txt.
  52. Hardware.txt Provides information about known problems and
  53. workarounds for hardware. You may also need
  54. to refer to Printers.txt or Mouse.txt for
  55. specific problems.
  56. Internet.txt Provides information to help you connect to
  57. the Internet if you haven't done so already.
  58. Also provides information about where to
  59. download Microsoft's new Web browser,
  60. Internet Explorer.
  61. Mouse.txt Provides information about known problems
  62. and workarounds specifically for mouse and
  63. keyboard problems.
  64. Msdosdrv.txt Contains syntax information for MS-DOS
  65. device drivers. For additional help on MS-DOS
  66. commands, see Config.txt. You can also use
  67. command-line help at the command prompt by
  68. typing /? following the command name.
  69. Msn.txt Provides information to help you connect to
  70. The Microsoft Network.
  71. Network.txt Provides information about installing and
  72. running network servers.
  73. Printers.txt Provides information about known problems
  74. and workarounds for printers.
  75. Programs.txt Provides information and workarounds for
  76. running some specific Windows-based and
  77. MS-DOS-based programs with Windows 95.
  78. Support.txt Provides Information about how to get
  79. additional support for Windows 95.
  80. Tips.txt Contains an assortment of tips and tricks
  81. for using Windows 95, most of which are not
  82. documented in online Help or the printed book.
  83. HOW TO READ README FILES
  84. ========================
  85. When you install Windows 95, all the readme files are copied to the
  86. \Windows directory.
  87. To open a readme file after you install Windows 95:
  88. 1. Click the Start menu.
  89. 2. Click Run.
  90. 3. Type the name of the readme file.
  91. Even if you haven't installed Windows 95 yet, you can still open a
  92. readme file.
  93. To open a readme file before you install Windows 95:
  94. If you purchased Windows 95 on floppy disks:

  96. 1. Insert Disk 1 into drive A (or whatever drive you prefer).
  97. 2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following:
  98. a:extract.exe /a /l c:\windows win95_02.cab filename.txt
  99. For example, if you want to open General.txt, you would type:
  100. a:extract.exe /a /l c:\windows win95_02.cab general.txt
  101. 3. Change to the \Windows directory.
  102. 4. At the command prompt, type the following:
  103. edit filename.txt
  104. If you purchased Windows 95 on a CD-ROM:
  105. ----------------------------------------
  106. 1. Insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive (drive x in this example).
  107. 2. Change to the \Win95 directory on your CD-ROM drive.
  108. 2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following:
  109. extract.exe /a /l c:\windows win95_02.cab filename.txt
  110. For example, if you want to open General.txt, you would type:
  111. extract.exe /a /l c:\windows win95_02.cab general.txt
  112. 3. Change to the Windows directory on your C drive.
  113. 4. At the command prompt, type the following:
  114. edit filename.txt
  115. UNINSTALLING WINDOWS 95
  116. =======================
  117. During Setup, you have the option of saving your system files so
  118. that you can uninstall Windows 95 later. If you want to be able to
  119. uninstall Windows 95 later, choose Yes. Setup will save your system
  120. files in a hidden, compressed file. If you don't need to be able to
  121. uninstall Windows 95 later, choose No.
  122. You will not see this Setup option if:
  123. - You are upgrading over an earlier version of Windows 95.
  124. - You are installing to a new directory.
  125. - You are running a version of MS-DOS earlier than 5.0.
  126. NOTE:The uninstall files must be saved on a local hard drive. You
  127. can't save them to a network drive or a floppy disk. If you have
  128. multiple local drives, you will be able to select the one you want
  129. to save the uninstall information on.
  130. To uninstall Windows 95 and completely restore your computer to its
  131. previous versions of MS-DOS and Windows 3.x, carry out the following
  132. procedure:
  133. 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
  134. Control Panel.
  135. 2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  136. 3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Windows 95, and then click
  137. Remove.
  138. Or, if you are having problems starting Windows 95, use your startup
  139. disk to start your computer, and then run UNINSTAL from the startup
  140. disk.
  141. NOTE: The uninstall program needs to shut down Windows 95. If there is
  142. a problem with this on your computer, restart your computer and press
  143. F8 when you see the message "Starting Windows 95." Then choose Command
  144. Prompt Only, and run UNINSTAL from the command prompt.
  145. If Windows 95 is running and you want to remove the uninstall files to
  146. free up 6 to 9 MB of disk space, carry out the following procedure:
  147. 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click
  148. Control Panel.
  149. 2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  150. 3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Old Windows 3.x/MS-DOS System
  151. Files, and then click Remove.
  152. You will no longer be able to uninstall Windows 95.
