  58. MICROSOFT INTERNET MAIL
  59. =======================
  60. Internet Mail is a new e-mail program designed specifically for
  61. the Internet. At this time, you cannot use Microsoft Internet Mail
  62. to access your e-mail account with any of the following services:
  63. MS Mail, cc:Mail, The Microsoft Network (MSN), CompuServe, America
  64. OnLine (AOL), and Microsoft Exchange Server. If you don't know
  65. whether your system uses these services, contact your administrator
  66. or your Internet service provider and ask if they support SMTP/POP
  67. mail clients.
  68. MICROSOFT INTERNET NEWS
  69. =======================
  70. Microsoft Internet News enables you to read bulletin board discussion
  71. groups, such as the Usenet, using NNTP-based news servers.
  72. You need to contact your Internet service provider for the name of
  73. the news server that you should use.
  74. This product can also be used for support on a variety of Microsoft
  75. products via msnews.microsoft.com.
  76. KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASE
  77. ============================
  78. For the latest information about known issues, see our Web page
  79. at http://www.microsoft.com/ie/feedback/imnissue.htm.
  80. Note: Some of the features that are not yet implemented already
  81. have menu commands. These commands are greyed out and are not
  82. available in the current release of Internet Mail and News.
  83. - The current release of Outlook Express does not work properly with
  84. Geocities mail accounts. This will be fixed for the next release.
  85. - The Find Messages function is not yet implemented; however,
  86. you can search for text within the body of a specific message.
  87. - Distribution lists in the address book are not implemented in this
  88. release.
  89. - Font changes in a message will not be retained when you send the
  90. message.
  91. - There is currently no view that shows all subscribed newsgroups and
  92. the number of unread messages.
  93. - You cannot rename folders yet. However, you can work around this by
  94. creating a new folder, moving the messages into it, and then deleting
  95. the original folder.
  96. - International character sets are available only for German and
  97. French.
  98. - You cannot print a message that you are composing.
  99. - When you cancel downloading a message in Internet Mail, it will not
  100. stop until after the current message has been downloaded.
  101. - By default, dictionaries other than US English are not automatically
  102. used by the spelling checker.
  103. - Full offline support is not currently available.
  104. - For this release, you cannot import or export address books or
  105. messages.
  106. - In order to send e-mail to someone who is not in your address
  107. book, you must enter a recognizable Internet e-mail address (that
  108. is, user@server).
  109. - The address book recognizes a name only if the full name matches.
  110. If you type only the first name, it is not recognized.
  111. - To use the Reply To Author and Forward functions from Internet News,
  112. you must make sure that Internet Mail is set as the default mail
  113. application. To change this setting, click the Mail menu, click
  114. Options, and then click the Send tab. Then click Set As Default.
  115. - The name you enter on the Server tab in the Options dialog box in
  116. Mail might not actually be the name that gets sent. Your mail server
  117. might change this information.
  118. - After you install Internet Mail and News on Windows NT 4.0, Setup
  119. requires you to restart your computer before you can run Internet
  120. Mail and News.
  121. TROUBLESHOOTING
  122. ===============
  123. - If you run into a problem, try the troubleshooters in online Help.
  124. To start the troubleshooters, carry out the following steps:
  125. 1. In Internet Mail or News, click the Help menu.
  126. 2. Look up "Troubleshooting" in the Help Index.
  127. - Check your connection to your Internet service provider.
  128. - If you're having trouble connecting with your modem, see the
  129. Modem Troubleshooter in Windows Help. To start the troubleshooter,
  130. carry out the following steps:
  131. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Help.
  132. 2. In Help Contents, double-click Troubleshooting.
  133. 3. Click "If you're having trouble using your modem."
  134. - If you think your modem is fine but you are having trouble
  135. getting Microsoft Internet Mail and News to connect to your
  136. service provider, try the Dial-Up Networking Troubleshooter.
  137. To start the troubleshooter, carry out the following steps:
  138. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Help.
  139. 2. In Help Contents, double-click Troubleshooting.
  140. 3. Click "If you're having trouble using Dial-Up Networking."
  141. - If you can run Microsoft Internet Mail and News but you cannot
  142. connect to your news server or POP3/SMTP server(s), check your
  143. settings for these servers. To do this, carry out the following
  144. steps in either program:
  145. 1. Click the Mail or News menu, and then click Options.
  146. 2. Click the Server tab, and then check the settings against those
  147. provided by your service provider.
  148. 3. If everything looks fine, contact your service provider to verify
  149. that you have the correct settings and that their servers are
  150. working properly.
  151. - If you are unable to send or receive mail, check the following:
  152. - The TCP/IP protocol is installed on your computer.
  153. - All cables are properly connected to your computer, modem,
  154. or LAN.
  155. - You have a PPP or SLIP account with your Internet Provider.
  156. - Your Internet Provider or LAN server supports POP3 and SMTP.
  157. - Your modem communication parameters (baud rate and type of
  158. protocol) are set correctly.
  159. - For this release, you must either (1) establish the connection
  160. to your Internet provider manually before attempting to send or
  161. receive mail, or (2) use Autodial (double-click the Internet icon
  162. in Control Panel).
  163. Note that Autodial automatically establishes your connection when
  164. you start Microsoft Internet Mail and News. However, it does not
  165. automatically terminate the connection when you exit Internet Mail
  166. and News. To terminate the connection, right-click the modem icon
  167. on your taskbar, and then click Disconnect.
  168. - If you use Autodial to establish your network connection and you
  169. either cancel the connection or the connection fails, you need
  170. to either (1) manually establish your Internet connection, or
  171. (2) restart your computer.
  172. - Microsoft Internet Mail and News ships with a new version of
  173. Comctl32.dll, which can be found in your Windows directory.
  174. There are no known compatibility problems with this .dll;
  175. however, if you discover a problem, you can go back to your
  176. original Windows 95 version by carrying out the following steps.
  177. Note that if you do this, Microsoft Internet Mail and News will
  178. no longer work.
  179. 1. Download Comctl32.dll from the following location:
  180. ftp://transfer.microsoft.com/msbeta/mailnews
  181. and save it on your hard disk.
  182. 2. Uninstall Internet Mail and News by double-clicking the
  183. Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.
  184. 3. Shut down your computer and restart it in MS-DOS mode.
  185. 4. Change to your Windows\System directory.
  186. 5. Copy the Comctl32.dll file that you downloaded over the
  187. Comctl32.dll file that is in your Windows\System directory.
  188. - Make sure that you use an account name and password for a news
  189. server only if it requires them. If you use an account name and
  190. password and they are not required, you will not be able to connect
  191. to the news server.
  192. - If you need to remove the cached news files, go to the News
  193. directory and delete all the *.nch files. To locate these files,
  194. carry out the following steps:
  195. 1. Click the Start button, and then point to Find.
  196. 2. Click Files Or Folders.
  197. 3. In the Name box, type *.nch, and then click Find Now.
  198. - To access the Microsoft peer product support newsgroups, carry
  199. out the following steps:
  200. 1. Click the News menu, and then click Options.
  201. 2. Click the Server tab, and then click Add.
  202. 3. Type msnews.microsoft.com as the name of the server.
  203. If that name isn't found by your Internet Service Provider, you
  204. can enter 131.107.3.27 instead.
  205. You do not need to enter an account name or password.
  206. - If your mail server times out while you are sending mail, you might
  207. get an error message indicating that a recipient is unknown. If this
  208. happens, you should increase the timeout for your server. To do this,
  209. carry out the following steps:
  210. 1. Click the Mail menu, and then click Options.
  211. 2. Click the Server tab, and then click Advanced Settings.
  212. 3. Drag the slider to increase the timeout for your server.
  213. - You cannot currently limit the newsgroups cache to a certain size
  214. or a percentage of your hard disk. However, you can use the Purge
  215. Cached Messages command on the News menu to reduce the size of the
  216. cache for a newsgroup.
  217. TIPS AND TRICKS
  218. ===============
  219. Minimizing Connection Time in News
  220. ----------------------------------
  221. - You can improve performance in Internet News over a modem by
  222. turning off the preview pane. Or, if you prefer to leave the
  223. preview pane on, you can prevent messages from automatically
  224. being downloaded into the preview pane when you click them. To
  225. do this, carry out the following steps:
  226. 1. On the News menu, click Options, and then click the Read tab.
  227. 2. Clear the following check box: Automatically Download Articles
  228. Into The Preview Pane.
  229. This doesn't turn off the preview pane, but it will improve
  230. performance. You can still download to the preview pane by
  231. pressing the SPACEBAR after selecting a message from the list.
  232. Customizing Internet Mail and News
  233. ----------------------------------
  234. - You can change the sound that notifies you that you have received
  235. new mail. To do this, open Control Panel, and then double-click the
  236. Sounds icon.
  237. - You can move the icon bar by clicking it and then dragging it. You
  238. can also turn the icon bar off by making sure that Icon Bar on the
  239. View menu is not checked, or turn the regular toolbar on by making
  240. sure that Toolbar on the View menu is checked.
  241. - You can resize the preview pane or the message list by dragging the
  242. divider between the preview pane and the message list.
  243. - You can change how the preview pane splits, or turn it off entirely
  244. by changing the options under Preview Pane on the View menu.
  245. - You can specify that you want to see only unread News messages. To
  246. do this, click the View menu, and then click Unread Messages Only.
  247. Other Tips
  248. ----------
  249. - In Internet Mail, you can leave a copy of your messages on the
  250. server. To set this option, click the Mail menu, and then click
  251. Options. Click the Server tab, and then click Advanced Settings.
  252. - In Internet News, you can search for newsgroups that contain
  253. several keywords by entering them into the search field separated
  254. by a space. You can also search newsgroup descriptions.
  255. - To switch to a different subscribed newsgroup quickly, click the

  259. - You can expand all the threads in a newsgroup by default. To do
  260. this, click the News menu, and then click Options. On the Read
  261. tab, select the Auto Expand Topics check box.
  262. - You can have your signature added to all messages, including those
  263. that you reply to or forward. To do this, click the Mail menu, and
  264. then click Options. On the Signature tab, select the following check
  265. box: Add Signature To The End Of All Outgoing Messages.
  266. - To switch to your Inbox, you can press CTRL+I.
  267. - To reorder columns, you can drag and drop column headings.
  268. - To save an attachment with a message from the preview pane, click
  269. the paper clip icon, and then hold down the CTRL key while you
  270. click the file you want to save. The Save As dialog box appears.
  271. - You can view all the headers for a news message. To do this,
  272. double-click the message to open it in a separate window, click
  273. the View menu, and then click Full Headers.
  274. SUPPORT FOR MICROSOFT INTERNET MAIL AND NEWS
  275. ============================================
  276. Because this is a beta release, no formal product support is available
  277. from Microsoft at this time. However, two new newsgroups are dedicated
  278. to the discussion of Microsoft Internet Mail and News and provide a
  279. great deal of informal support:
  280. - news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internet.mail
  281. - news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.internet.news
  282. To read them, carry out the following procedure:

  284. 2. Click the Server tab, and then click Add.
  285. 3. Type msnews.microsoft.com as the name of the server.
  286. You do not need to enter an account name or password. This site is
  287. the best place to go if you are experiencing a problem, as the
  288. solution may already be posted by someone else who experienced the
  289. same problem.
  290. You can also submit bugs at the following sites:
  291. - http://www.microsoft.com/ie/feedback/imail.htm (for Mail)
  292. - http://www.microsoft.com/ie/feedback/inews.htm (for News)
