  12. Connection Sharing Component Description</H1>
  13. <P>Internet Connection Sharing allows multiple computers to use a single public
  14. Internet Protocol (IP) address. One computer, the Connection Sharing server, is
  15. connected to a public network and a private network. The Connection Sharing
  16. server modifies packets from computers on a private network that are destined
  17. for a public network so that such packets appear to come from the Connection
  18. Sharing computer. Likewise, the Connection Sharing server modifies packets
  19. received from the public network to send them to the appropriate computer on the
  20. private network.</P>
  21. <P>Connection Sharing provides security for computers on the private network
  22. because private computers are not directly addressable from a public network.
  23. There is no way for a computer on a public network to send unsolicited traffic
  24. to a computer on a private network. </P>
  25. <P>The Connection Sharing server also provides Dynamic Host Configuration
  26. Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS) services to the private
  27. network.</P>
  28. <P>Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) extends the security that Connection
  29. Sharing provides to computers on the private network. ICF also provides security
  30. to the Connection Sharing server computer or a standalone computer, such as a
  31. computer that is connected to a single public network. By keeping track of the
  32. network traffic that programs on the computer generate, Connection Sharing
  33. prevents unsolicited traffic from being processed by the computer. </P>
  34. <H1>Component Configuration</H1>
  35. <P>The main access point for the Connection Sharing and ICF configuration is the
  36. <B>Advanced</B> tab of the network connection properties. This user interface
  37. (UI) allows a user to enable and disable Connection Sharing and ICF and to
  38. configure various aspects of their operation. The following list describes these
  39. aspects:
  40. <UL type=disc>
  41. <LI>Enabling or disabling autodial for Connection Sharing when the public
  42. connection is not always on, for example, for a dial-up connection.
  43. <LI>Enabling or disabling the ability for Connection Sharing client computers
  44. to alter the Connection Sharing configuration.
  45. <LI>Exposing services provided by a computer on the private network or on a
  46. computer protected by a firewall to the public network. For example, the
  47. service could open ports in the firewall, and optionally map ports to specific
  48. computers on the private network.
  49. <LI>Firewall logging configuration. The firewall can log dropped packets or a
  50. connection's creation or removal.
