  7. These notes support a preliminary release of a software program that
  8. bears the project code name Whistler.
  9. ======================================================================
  10. 8.0 Deciding Whether a Computer Will Contain More Than One Operating
  11. System
  12. ======================================================================
  13. A computer can be set up so that you can choose between two or more
  14. operating systems each time you restart the computer. For example, you
  15. could set up a server to run Whistler Server most of the time but
  16. allow it to sometimes run Windows NT Server version 4.0 in order to
  17. support an older application. (However, to do this you would need to
  18. make specific file system choices and would probably need the latest
  19. released Service Pack, as described in "Multiple Operating Systems and
  20. File System Compatibility" and "Choosing a File System" later in this
  21. text file series.) During restart, you can select which of the two
  22. operating systems you want to run. (You can specify a default
  23. operating system that will run if no selection is made during the
  24. restart process.)
  25. Important: If you set up a computer so that the installed operating
  26. systems include Whistler and any other operating system, you must
  27. install Whistler in a separate partition on the computer. (A partition
  28. divides a disk into sections that function as separate units and that
  29. can be formatted for use by a file system. Different partitions often
  30. have different drive letters, for example, C and D.) Installing
  31. Whistler in a separate partition ensures that it will not overwrite
  32. crucial files used by the other operating system.
  33. The reason for setting up a computer so that you can choose between
  34. two or more operating systems at startup is that you can use
  35. applications that run only with a particular operating system. There
  36. are definite drawbacks to setting up a computer this way, however:
  37. each operating system uses valuable disk space, and compatibility
  38. issues, especially file system compatibility, can be complex. In
  39. addition, you cannot use dynamic disks (a storage type available in
  40. Whistler) with some operating systems. The only operating systems that
  41. can access a dynamic disk are Windows 2000 and Whistler.
  42. Note: If you are considering setting up a computer with more than one
  43. operating system to ensure that you will always have a way to start
  44. the computer (regardless of driver or disk problems), first take into
  45. account the variety of disaster-recovery features available in
  46. Whistler. One example of these features is safe mode, in which
  47. Whistler restarts with default settings and the minimum number of
  48. drivers (ensuring the ability to start even if a new driver is causing
  49. a problem). With this and a variety of other disaster-recovery
  50. features, it is not necessary to maintain more than one operating
  51. system as a safeguard against system problems. Avoiding multiple
  52. operating systems means you also avoid file system compatibility
  53. issues and other drawbacks. For more information about disaster
  54. recovery, see Whistler Help and Support Services. To open Help and
  55. Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start, and then click
  56. Help and Support.
  57. Before deciding to set up a computer with more than one operating
  58. system, review the following restrictions.
  59. On computers that contain MS-DOS and Whistler:
  60. * Install each operating system in a different partition, and
  61. install the applications used with an operating system in the
  62. same partition with it. If an application is used with two
  63. different operating systems, install it in two partitions.
  64. * The primary partition must be formatted as FAT.
  65. * Whistler must be installed last. Otherwise important files needed
  66. for starting Whistler could be overwritten.
  67. * File system compatibility might be an issue. See "Multiple
  68. Operating Systems and File System Compatibility" later in this
  69. text file series.
  70. On computers that contain Windows 95 and Whistler:
  71. * Install each operating system on a different partition, and
  72. install the applications used with an operating system on the
  73. same partition with it. If an application is used with two
  74. different operating systems, install it on two partitions.
  75. * The primary partition must be formatted as FAT. (For Windows 95
  76. OSR2, the primary partition must be formatted as FAT or FAT32.)
  77. * Compressed DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes won't be available
  78. while you are running Whistler. It is not necessary to
  79. uncompress DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes that you will
  80. access only with Windows 95.
  81. * Whistler must be installed last. Otherwise important files needed
  82. for starting Whistler could be overwritten.
  83. * File system compatibility might be an issue. See "Multiple
  84. Operating Systems and File System Compatibility" later in this
  85. text file series.
  86. On computers that contain Windows 98 and Whistler:
  87. * Install each operating system on a different partition, and
  88. install the applications used with an operating system on the
  89. same partition with it. If an application is used with two
  90. different operating systems, install it on two partitions.
  91. * The primary partition must be formatted as FAT or FAT32.
  92. * Compressed DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes won't be available
  93. while you are running Whistler. It is not necessary to
  94. uncompress DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes that you will
  95. access only with Windows 98.
  96. * File system compatibility might be an issue. See "Multiple
  97. Operating Systems and File System Compatibility" later in this
  98. text file series.
  99. On computers that contain Windows NT 4.0 and Whistler:
  100. * See "Multiple Operating Systems and File System Compatibility" and
  101. "Computers that Contain Windows NT 4.0 and Whistler Server"
  102. later in this text file series.
  103. On computers that contain Windows 2000 and Whistler or that contain
  104. multiple Whistler partitions:
  105. * Install each operating system on a different partition, and
  106. install the applications used with an operating system on the
  107. same partition with it. If an application is used with two
  108. different operating systems, install it on two partitions.
  109. * When installing Whistler on a partition, you can choose any
  110. product in the Whistler product family. For example, for a
  111. computer containing multiple Whistler partitions, you could
  112. install Whistler Server on one partition and Whistler
  113. Professional on another.
  114. * If the computer participates in a domain, use a different computer
  115. name for each installation. Because a unique security identifier
  116. (SID) is used for each installation of Whistler on a domain, the
  117. computer name for each installation must be unique, even for
  118. multiple installations on the same computer.
  119. * If you want to use Encrypting File System (EFS), you must take
  120. certain steps to ensure that encrypted files will be available
  121. from each of the installations. For more information,
  122. see "Multiple Operating Systems and Encrypting File System"
  123. later in this text file series.
  124. 8.1 Multiple Operating Systems and File System Compatibility
  125. ======================================================================
  126. On computers that contain multiple operating systems, compatibility
  127. becomes more complex when you consider file system choices. The file
  128. systems to choose from are NTFS, FAT, and FAT32. For more
  129. information, see "Choosing a File System" later in this text file
  130. series.
  131. NTFS is normally the recommended file system because it supports
  132. important features, including Active Directory and domain-based
  133. security. With NTFS, however, you need to take file system
  134. compatibility into account when considering whether to set up a
  135. computer to contain more than one operating system, because the
  136. version of NTFS in Windows 2000 and Whistler has new features in
  137. addition to those in Windows NT. Files that use any new features will
  138. be completely usable or readable only when the computer is started
  139. with Windows 2000 or Whistler. For example, a file that uses the new
  140. encryption feature won't be readable when the computer is started with
  141. Windows NT Server 4.0, which was released before the encryption
  142. feature existed. For more information about features that affect file
  143. accessibility with Whistler, see "NTFS" later in this text file
  144. series.
  145. Note: If you want to set up a computer with both Windows NT and
  146. Whistler, and you want to have an NTFS partition, the only appropriate
  147. version of Windows NT is version 4.0 with the latest released Service
  148. Pack. Using the latest Service Pack maximizes compatibility between
  149. Windows NT 4.0 and the updated NTFS file system used with Whistler
  150. Server. (Specifically, this compatibility in file systems is provided
  151. by Service Pack 4 and later Service Packs.) Even the latest Service
  152. Pack, however, does not provide access to files using the new features
  153. in NTFS. Using NTFS as the only file system on a computer that
  154. contains both Whistler and Windows NT is not recommended. On these
  155. computers, a FAT partition containing the Windows NT 4.0 operating
  156. system ensures that when started with Windows NT 4.0, the computer
  157. will have access to needed files.
  158. If you set up a computer so that it starts with Windows NT 3.51 or
  159. earlier on a FAT partition, and Whistler Server is contained in an
  160. NTFS partition, when that computer starts with Windows NT 3.51, the
  161. NTFS partition will not be visible.
  162. 8.2 Computers that Contain Windows NT 4.0 and Whistler Server
  163. ======================================================================
  164. Before you set up a computer that contains Windows NT 4.0 and Whistler
  165. Server, review the following precautions:
  166. * If your only concern is ensuring that you can always start the
  167. computer, setting up the computer so that you can start it with
  168. different operating systems at different times is not necessary.
  169. For more information, see "Deciding Whether a Computer Will
  170. Contain More Than One Operating System" earlier in this text
  171. file series.
  172. * Using NTFS as the only file system on a computer that contains both
  173. Whistler and Windows NT is not recommended. For more
  174. information, see "Multiple Operating Systems and File System
  175. Compatibility" earlier in this text file series.
  176. * Make sure that Windows NT 4.0 has been updated with the latest
  177. released Service Pack. For details, see "Multiple Operating
  178. Systems and File System Compatibility" earlier in this text file
  179. series.
  180. * Install each operating system on a different partition, and
  181. install the applications used with an operating system on the
  182. same partition with it. If an application is used with two
  183. different operating systems, install it on two partitions.
  184. When you perform a new installation of Whistler Server (as opposed
  185. to an upgrade), by default, the installation is placed on a
  186. partition on which no other operating system is located. You can
  187. specify a different partition during Setup.
  188. * Don't install Whistler on a compressed drive unless the drive was
  189. compressed with the NTFS file system compression feature.
  190. * If the computer participates in a domain, use a different computer
  191. name for each installation.

  194. 8.3 Multiple Operating Systems and Encrypting File System
  195. ======================================================================
  196. If you set up a server so that it contains Windows 2000 and Whistler
  197. or contains multiple Whistler partitions, and you want to use
  198. Encrypting File System (EFS) on the computer, you must take certain
  199. steps. These steps make encrypted files readable between the different
  200. installations.
  201. * One approach is to ensure that all the installations are in the
  202. same domain and that the user of these installations has a
  203. roaming profile.
  204. * Another approach is to export the user's file encryption
  205. certificate and associated private key from one installation and
  206. import it into the other installations.
  207. For more information about EFS, roaming user profiles, and importing
  208. and exporting certificates, see Whistler Help and Support Services. To
  209. open Help and Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start,
  210. and then click Help and Support.
  211. ======================================================================
  212. 9.0 Choosing a File System
  213. ======================================================================
  214. You can choose among three file systems for disk partitions on a
  215. computer running Whistler: NTFS, FAT, and FAT32. NTFS is the
  216. recommended system. FAT and FAT32 are similar to each other, except
  217. that FAT32 is designed for larger disks than FAT. (The file system
  218. that works most easily with large disks is NTFS.) This section
  219. provides information to help you compare the file systems. The section
  220. that follows provides additional information about NTFS.
  221. NTFS has always been a more powerful file system than FAT and FAT32.
  222. Windows 2000 and Whistler include a new version of NTFS, with support
  223. for a variety of features including Active Directory, which is needed
  224. for domains, user accounts, and other important security features. For
  225. more details about features in NTFS, see "NTFS" later in this text
  226. file series.
  227. Setup makes it easy to convert your partition to the new version of
  228. NTFS, even if it used FAT or FAT32 before. This kind of conversion
  229. keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition). If you don't
  230. need to keep your files intact and you have a FAT or FAT32 partition,
  231. you should format the partition with NTFS rather than converting from
  232. FAT or FAT32. Formatting a partition erases all data on the partition,
  233. but a partition that is formatted with NTFS rather than converted from
  234. FAT or FAT32 will have less fragmentation and better performance.
  235. However, it is still advantageous to use NTFS, regardless of whether
  236. the partition was formatted with NTFS or converted. A partition can
  237. also be converted after Setup by using Convert.exe. For more
  238. information about Convert.exe, after completing Setup, click Start,
  239. click Run, type cmd and then press ENTER. In the command window, type
  240. help convert, and then press ENTER.
  241. Note: You can use important features such as Active Directory and
  242. domain-based security only by choosing NTFS as your file system.
  243. There is one situation in which you might want to choose FAT or FAT32
  244. as your file system. If it is necessary to have a computer that will
  245. sometimes run Whistler and sometimes run Windows NT or an earlier
  246. operating system, you will need to have a FAT or FAT32 partition as
  247. the primary (or startup) partition on the hard disk. This is because
  248. these earlier operating systems, with one exception, can't access a
  249. partition if it uses the latest version of NTFS. The one exception is
  250. Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 4 or later, which has access
  251. to partitions with the latest version of NTFS, but with some
  252. limitations. Windows NT 4.0 cannot access files that have been stored
  253. using NTFS features that did not exist when Windows NT 4.0 was
  254. released. For more information, see "Deciding Whether a Computer Will
  255. Contain More Than One Operating System" and "Multiple Operating
  256. Systems and File System Compatibility" earlier in this text file
  257. series.
  258. For anything other than a situation with multiple operating systems,
  259. however, the recommended file system is NTFS.
  260. The following list describes the compatibility of each file system
  261. with various operating systems.
  262. * NTFS: A computer running Windows 2000 or Whistler can access files
  263. on an NTFS partition. A computer running Windows NT 4.0 with
  264. Service Pack 4 or later might be able to access some files.
  265. Other operating systems allow no access.
  266. * FAT: Access is available through MS-DOS, all versions of Windows,
  267. Windows NT, Whistler, and OS/2.
  268. * FAT32: Access is available only through Windows 95 OSR2, Windows
  269. 98, Windows 2000, and Whistler.
  270. The following list compares disk and file sizes possible with each
  271. file system.
  272. * NTFS: Recommended minimum volume size is approximately 10 MB.
  273. Recommended practical maximum for volumes is 2 TB (terabytes).
  274. Much larger sizes are possible.
  275. Cannot be used on floppy disks.
  276. File size limited only by size of volume.
  277. * FAT: Volumes from floppy disk size up to 4 GB.
  278. Does not support domains.
  279. Maximum file size is 2 GB.
  280. * FAT32: Volumes from 512 MB to 2 TB.
  281. In Whistler, you can format a FAT32 volume only up to 32 GB.
  282. Does not support domains.
  283. Maximum file size is 4 GB.
  284. Note: If you choose to format a partition as FAT during Setup and the
  285. partition is larger than 2 GB, Setup will automatically format it as
  286. FAT32.
  287. 9.1 NTFS
  288. ======================================================================
  289. Some of the features you can use when you choose NTFS are:
  290. * Active Directory, which you can use to view and control network
  291. resources easily.
  292. * Domains, which are part of Active Directory, and which you can use
  293. to fine-tune security options while keeping administration
  294. simple. Domain controllers require NTFS.
  295. * File encryption, which greatly enhances security.
  296. * Permissions that can be set on individual files rather than just
  297. folders.
  298. * Sparse files. These are very large files created by applications
  299. in such a way that only limited disk space is needed. That is,
  300. NTFS allocates disk space only to the portions of a file that
  301. are written to.
  302. * Remote Storage, which provides an extension to your disk space by
  303. making removable media such as tapes more accessible.
  304. * Recovery logging of disk activities, which helps you restore
  305. information quickly in the event of power failure or other
  306. system problems.
  307. * Disk quotas, which you can use to monitor and control the amount
  308. of disk space used by individual users.
  309. * Better scalability to large drives. The maximum drive size for
  310. NTFS is much greater than that for FAT, and as drive size
  311. increases, performance with NTFS doesn't degrade as it does with
  312. FAT.
  313. This is only a partial list of the features in NTFS in Whistler.
  314. Setup makes it easy to convert your partition to the new
  315. version of NTFS, even if it used FAT or FAT32 before. This kind of
  316. conversion keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition).
  317. Setup begins by checking the existing file system. If it is NTFS,
  318. conversion happens automatically. If it is FAT or FAT32, Setup gives
  319. you the choice of whether to convert to NTFS. If you don't need to
  320. keep your files intact and you have a FAT or FAT32 partition, you should format the partition with NTFS rather than converting from FAT

  330. ======================================================================
  331. 10.0 Planning Disk Partitions for New Installations
  332. ======================================================================
  333. You will need to plan your disk partitions before running Setup only
  334. if you are performing a new installation, not an upgrade. Disk
  335. partitioning is a way of dividing your physical disk so that each
  336. section functions as a separate unit. When you create partitions on a
  337. disk, you divide the disk into one or more areas that can be formatted
  338. for use by a file system, such as FAT or NTFS. Different partitions
  339. often have different drive letters (for example, C and D). A
  340. primary partition, or system partition, is one on which you can
  341. install the files needed to load an operating system such as
  342. Whistler.
  343. Important: If you plan to delete or create partitions on a hard disk,
  344. be sure to back up the disk contents beforehand because these actions
  345. will destroy any existing data. As with any major change to disk
  346. contents, you should back up the entire contents of the hard disk
  347. before working with partitions, even if you plan to leave one or more
  348. of your partitions alone.
  349. Do not install Whistler on a compressed drive unless the partition
  350. was compressed with the NTFS file system compression feature.
  351. (Uncompress a DriveSpace or DoubleSpace drive before running Whistler
  352. Setup on it.)
  353. Before running Setup to perform a new installation, you will need to
  354. determine the size of the partition on which to install Whistler
  355. Server. There is no set formula for figuring a partition size. The
  356. basic principle is to allow plenty of room for the operating system,
  357. applications, and other files that you might group together on the
  358. installation partition. The files for setting up Whistler Server
  359. require at least 1 GB of free space on the disk, as described
  360. in "System Requirements" earlier in this text file series. You should
  361. allow considerably more disk space than the minimum amount. Allowing
  362. 2-4 GB on the partition is not unreasonable, and for larger
  363. installations, it is not unreasonable to allow 10 GB. This allows
  364. space for a variety of items, including optional components, user
  365. accounts, Active Directory information, logs, future service packs,
  366. the pagefile used by the operating system, and other items.
  367. When you perform a new installation of Whistler Server, you can
  368. select the partition on which to install. If you specify a partition
  369. on which another operating system exists, you will be prompted to
  370. confirm your choice.
  371. During Setup, create and size only the partition on which you want to
  372. install Whistler. After Whistler is installed, you can use Disk
  373. Management to manage new and existing disks and volumes. This includes
  374. creating new partitions from unpartitioned space; deleting, renaming,
  375. and reformatting existing partitions; adding and removing hard disks;
  376. and changing a basic disk to the dynamic disk storage type, or dynamic
  377. to basic. (Note that you cannot use dynamic disks on some computers
  378. that contain multiple operating systems. The only operating systems
  379. that can access a dynamic disk are Windows 2000 and Whistler.)
  380. Important: If you're setting up a computer so that it contains
  381. multiple operating systems, you must install Whistler on its own
  382. partition. This ensures that Whistler will not overwrite crucial files
  383. needed by the other operating system. For more information, see
  384. "Deciding Whether a Computer Will Contain More Than One Operating
  385. System" earlier in this text file series.
  386. 10.1 Disk Partition Requirements for Remote Installation Services
  387. ======================================================================
  388. If you plan to use Remote Installation Services on this server (so
  389. that you can install operating systems onto other computers), you will
  390. need a separate partition for use by Remote Installation Services.
  391. Plan on using NTFS on this partition: NTFS is required for the Single
  392. Instance Store feature of Remote Installation Services. If you need to
  393. create a new partition for Remote Installation Services, plan on doing
  394. it after Setup and leave enough unpartitioned disk space so that you
  395. can create it (2 GB of space is recommended, but you might need less,
  396. depending on how the server will be used). Alternatively, you can plan
  397. to make the disk a dynamic disk, which allows more flexibility in the
  398. use of the disk space than a basic disk. (However, you cannot use
  399. dynamic disks on some computers that contain multiple operating
  400. systems. The only operating systems that can access a dynamic disk are
  401. Windows 2000 and Whistler.)
  402. For information about Remote Installation Services and about disk and

  404. Help and Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start, and
  405. then click Help and Support.
  406. 10.2 Options When Partitioning a Disk
  407. ======================================================================
  408. You can change the partitions on your disk during Setup only if you
  409. are performing a new installation, not an upgrade. You can modify the
  410. partitioning of the disk after Setup by using Disk Management.
  411. If you are performing a new installation, Setup examines the hard
  412. disk to determine its existing configuration, and then offers the
  413. following options:
  414. * If the hard disk is unpartitioned, you can create and size the
  415. Whistler partition.
  416. * If the hard disk is partitioned but has enough unpartitioned disk
  417. space, you can create the Whistler partition by using the
  418. unpartitioned space.
  419. * If the hard disk has an existing partition that is large enough,
  420. you can install Whistler on that partition, with or without
  421. reformatting the partition first. Reformatting a partition
  422. erases all data on the partition. If you don't reformat the
  423. partition but you do install Whistler where there was already an
  424. operating system, that operating system will be overwritten, and
  425. you will have to re-install any applications you want to use
  426. with Whistler.
  427. * If the hard disk has an existing partition, you can delete it to
  428. create more unpartitioned disk space for the Whistler partition.
  429. Deleting an existing partition also erases any data on that
  430. partition.
  431. ======================================================================
  432. 11.0 Choosing Components to Install
  433. ======================================================================
  434. The Whistler Server family of products includes a wide variety of
  435. core components, including a number of administrative tools, that
  436. Setup installs automatically. In addition, you can choose from a
  437. number of optional components that extend the functionality of your
  438. server. You can install these components during Setup, or you can add
  439. them later (through Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel).
  440. Alternatively, after Setup, you can use the Configure Your Server
  441. Wizard, which will choose and install components for you according to
  442. the type of server you specify.
  443. Choosing more of these components means providing more possibilities
  444. on the server. However, you should choose only the components you
  445. need because each component requires additional disk space. The
  446. following table (and the list that follows it) will help you choose
  447. the components you need in your installation.

  491. The following list describes the components in the preceding table
  492. and all other components that you can install.
  493. Accessories and Utilities
  494. Includes desktop accessories such as WordPad, Paint, Calculator,
  495. and CD Player, as well as the Accessibility Wizard. To select
  496. individual items, in the Windows Components Wizard, select
  497. Accessories and Utilities, click Details, and then select the

  499. Certificate Services
  500. Provides security and authentication support, including secure
  501. e-mail, Web-based authentication, and smart card authentication.
  502. For information about authentication of dial-up users, see
  503. "Networking Services" later in this list.
  504. Fax Service
  505. Provides support for the sending and receiving of faxes.
  506. Indexing Service
  507. Provides indexing functions for documents stored on disk. By using
  508. Indexing Service, you can search for specific document text or
  509. properties.
  510. Internet Information Services (IIS)
  511. Provides support for Web-site creation, configuration, and
  512. management, along with Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP),
  513. File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
  514. (SMTP).
  515. Management and Monitoring Tools
  516. Provides tools for communications administration, monitoring, and
  517. management, including applications that support development of
  518. customized client dialers for remote users and implementation of
  519. phone books that can be automatically updated from a central server.
  520. In addition, Management and Monitoring Tools includes Simple
  521. Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Windows Management
  522. Instrumentation (WMI) SNMP Provider.
  523. Message Queuing Services
  524. Provides a communication infrastructure and a development tool
  525. for creating distributed messaging applications. Such applications
  526. can communicate across heterogeneous networks and with computers
  527. that might be offline. Message Queuing Services provide guaranteed
  528. message delivery, efficient routing, security, transactional
  529. support, and priority-based messaging.
  530. Networking Services
  531. Provides important support for networking, including the items
  532. in the following list. For information about network monitoring,
  533. see "Management and Monitoring Tools" earlier in this list. For
  534. background information about IP addresses and name resolution,
  535. see "Networking: TCP/IP, IP Addresses, and Name Resolution" later
  536. in this text file series.
  537. * COM Internet Services Proxy. Supports distributed applications
  538. that use HTTP to communicate through Internet Information
  539. Services.
  540. * DNS. Provides name resolution for clients running Windows 2000
  541. or Whistler. With name resolution, users can gain access to
  542. servers by name instead of having to use IP addresses that are
  543. difficult to recognize and remember.
  544. * Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Gives a server the
  545. capability of assigning IP addresses dynamically to network
  546. devices. These devices typically include server and
  547. workstation computers but can also include other devices
  548. such as printers and scanners. With DHCP, you do not need to
  549. set and maintain static IP addresses on any of these
  550. devices, except for intranet servers providing DHCP, DNS,
  551. or WINS service.
  552. * Internet Authentication Service (IAS). Performs authentication,
  553. authorization, and accounting of dial-up and virtual private
  554. network (VPN) users. IAS supports the widely used protocol
  555. called Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS).
  556. * QoS Admission Control Service. Controls how
  557. applications are allotted network bandwidth. You can give
  558. important applications more bandwidth, less important
  559. applications less bandwidth.
  560. * Simple TCP/IP Services. Supports Character Generator, Daytime
  561. Discard, Echo, and Quote of the Day.
  562. * Universal Plug and Play. Installs Universal Plug
  563. and Play devices so that you can use them immediately, without
  564. additional configuration steps.
  565. * Universal Plug and Play Device Host. Provides support to host
  566. Universal Plug and Play devices.
  567. * Windows Internet Name Service (WINS). Provides name resolution
  568. for clients running Windows NT and earlier versions of
  569. Microsoft operating systems. With name resolution, users can
  570. access servers by name, instead of having to use IP
  571. addresses that are difficult to recognize and remember.
  572. Other Network File and Print Services
  573. Provides file and print services for the Macintosh operating system,
  574. as well as print services for UNIX.
  575. Remote Installation Services
  576. Provides services that you can use to set up new client computers
  577. remotely, without the need to visit each client. The target clients
  578. must either support remote startup with the Pre-Boot eXecution
  579. Environment (PXE) ROM, or else must be started with a remote-start
  580. floppy disk. On the server, you will need a separate partition for
  581. Remote Installation Services. For more information, see "Disk
  582. Partition Requirements for Remote Installation Services" earlier in
  583. this text file series.
  584. Remote Storage
  585. Provides an extension to your disk space by making removable media
  586. such as tapes more accessible. Infrequently used data can
  587. automatically be transferred to tape and retrieved when needed.
  588. Root Certificates Auto Update
  589. Supports automatic update of the certificate root store.
  590. Terminal Server
  591. Terminal Server provides the ability to run client applications on
  592. the server, while "thin client" software acts as a terminal emulator
  593. on the client. Each user sees an individual session, displayed as a
  594. Whistler desktop, and each session is managed by the server,
  595. independent of any other client session. If you install Terminal
  596. Server, you must also install Terminal Server Licensing on at least
  597. one computer (not necessarily a computer on which you install
  598. Terminal Server). However, temporary licenses can be issued for
  599. clients that allow you to use Terminal Server for up to 90 days.
  600. Terminal Server Licensing
  601. Provides a licensing service that allows you to download, issue,
  602. and track licenses for Terminal Server clients. If you install
  603. Terminal Server, you must also install Terminal Server Licensing
  604. on at least one computer (not necessarily a computer on which you
  605. install Terminal Server). However, temporary licenses can be issued
  606. for clients that allow you to use Terminal Server for up to 90 days.
  607. To register a license server quickly, install it on a computer that
  608. has Internet access.
  609. During Terminal Server Licensing Setup, you can select from two types
  610. of license server: domain license server (the default) or enterprise
  611. license server. A domain license server can only support Terminal
  612. servers that are in the same domain as the license server. You must
  613. choose a domain license server if the license server is in a workgroup
  614. or a Windows NT 4.0 domain. Regardless of the type of domain, you can
  615. choose a domain license server if you want to maintain a separate
  616. license server for each domain. In Whistler domains, you must install
  617. the domain license server on a domain controller. In workgroups or
  618. Windows NT 4.0 domains, you can install the domain license server on
  619. any server.
  620. You can also choose to install a license server as an enterprise
  621. license server. An enterprise license server can support Terminal
  622. servers in Whistler domains or mixed domains (that is, with some
  623. domain controllers running Whistler and some domain controllers
  624. running Windows NT 4.0). You must choose an enterprise license server
  625. if the license server will support Terminal servers in multiple
  626. Whistler domains.
  627. Windows Media Services (for x86-based computers only)
  628. Provides multimedia support, allowing you to deliver content using
  629. Advanced Streaming Format over an intranet or the Internet.
  630. ======================================================================
  631. 12.0 Networking: TCP/IP, IP Addresses, and Name Resolution
  632. ======================================================================
  633. TCP/IP is the network protocol that provides Internet access. It is
  634. the protocol used by most servers, although you can use additional or
  635. different network adapters and their associated protocols on your
  636. servers. (For information about using other network adapters, read the
  637. adapter documentation, and see "Taking an Optional Device Inventory"
  638. earlier in this text file series.) Setup and the Configure Your Server
  639. Wizard are designed to make it easy to configure TCP/IP and the
  640. services that support it.
  641. To use TCP/IP, make sure that each server is provided with an IP
  642. address, either a dynamic or automatic address provided through
  643. software, or a static address that you obtain and set. Because these
  644. addresses are numbers and therefore hard to remember, you will also
  645. have to provide users with names that are easier to use. Mapping this
  646. type of name to an IP address is called name resolution and can be
  647. accomplished by various methods, primarily by using DNS and Windows Internet
  648. Name Service (WINS). The following sections provide more information.
  649. 12.1 IP Addresses
  650. ======================================================================
  651. As described in the preceding section, using TCP/IP requires that an
  652. IP address be provided for each computer, either automatically by
  653. Whistler, dynamically through the DHCP service (which you configure),
  654. or statically (using an IP address that you have obtained).
  655. You can allow Whistler to provide IP addresses automatically during
  656. Setup, and then, after Setup, change your configuration to use DHCP,
  657. Static addressing, or both. For more information about DHCP and IP
  658. addressing, see Whistler Help and Support Services. To open Help and
  659. Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start, and then click
  660. Help and Support.
  661. The following list describes the methods you can use to provide an IP
  662. address:
  663. * For a limited number of servers (five or fewer) on a small private
  664. network, you can use the Whistler Server feature called
  665. Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) to automatically assign
  666. IP addresses for you. In Setup, automatic addressing is
  667. available from the Networking Settings dialog box when you
  668. select the Typical settings option.
  669. * If your network has more than one subnet, choose one server on
  670. which to install and configure the Dynamic Host Configuration
  671. Protocol (DHCP) component. The DHCP server will provide IP
  672. addresses dynamically to other computers. It must itself be
  673. assigned a static IP address (so other computers can locate it).
  674. In this situation, in order to support clients, you might also
  675. need one or more servers with the DNS component, the
  676. Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) component, or both. DNS and
  677. WINS are described in the following section, "Name Resolution for
  678. TCP/IP." One server or several servers can provide DHCP, DNS,
  679. and/or WINS. Any server providing these services should be assigned
  680. a static IP address (so other computers can locate it). For
  681. detailed information about assigning a static IP address, see
  682. "Specifying Networking Settings" later in this text file series.
  683. * If a particular server will be directly providing access to users
  684. on the Internet, you must assign that server a static IP
  685. address. You can obtain an address and an associated domain name
  686. from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or from the Internet
  687. Network Information Center (InterNIC). For more information
  688. about InterNIC, see:
  689. http://internic.net/
  690. If a computer has more than one network adapter, it will need a
  691. separate IP address for each adapter. For detailed information
  692. about assigning a static IP address, see "Specifying Networking
  693. Settings" later in this text file series.
  694. After a server is provided with an IP addressing option, the next
  695. components to consider are those that provide for name resolution,
  696. which is the process of mapping a computer name (something that users
  697. can recognize and remember) to the appropriate IP address. The
  698. following sections describe options for name resolution.
  699. 12.2 Name Resolution for TCP/IP
  700. ======================================================================
  701. Name resolution is a process that provides users with easy-to-remember
  702. server names, instead of requiring them to use the numerical IP
  703. addresses by which servers identify themselves on the TCP/IP network.
  704. The name-resolution services are DNS and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS).
  705. 12.2.1 DNS
  706. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  707. DNS is a hierarchical naming system used for locating computers on
  708. the Internet and private TCP/IP networks. One or more DNS servers are
  709. needed in most installations. DNS is required for Internet e-mail, Web
  710. browsing, and Active Directory. DNS is also required in domains with
  711. clients running Windows 2000 or Whistler. DNS is installed
  712. automatically when you create a domain controller (or promote a server
  713. to become a domain controller), unless the Whistler software detects
  714. that a DNS server already exists for that domain. (Alternatively, you
  715. can explicitly select DNS as a component to install during or after
  716. Setup.)
  717. If you are installing DNS on a server, you will need to specify a
  718. static IP address on that server. In addition, you will need to
  719. configure the DNS clients so that they recognize that IP address. For
  720. information about assigning a static IP address, see "Specifying
  721. Networking Settings" later in this text file series. For information
  722. about configuring DNS, see Whistler Help and Support Services. To open
  723. Help and Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start, and
  724. then click Help and Support.
  725. 12.2.2 Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)
  726. If you provide support for clients running Windows NT or any earlier
  727. Microsoft operating system, you will need to install Windows Internet
  728. Name Service (WINS) on one or more servers in the domain. WINS is an
  729. optional software component and appears under Networking Services in
  730. the list of installable Windows components. (For more information
  731. about different ways you can install components during or after Setup,
  732. see "Choosing Components to Install" earlier in this text
  733. file series.) If you are installing WINS on a server, you will need to
  734. specify a static IP address on that server. In addition, you will need
  735. to configure the WINS clients so that they recognize that IP address.

  737. Networking Settings" later in this text file series. For information
  738. about configuring WINS, see Whistler Help and Support Services. To
  739. open Help and Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start,
  740. and then click Help and Support.
  741. ======================================================================
  742. 13.0 Deciding Between Workgroups and Domains
  743. ======================================================================
  744. A domain is a grouping of accounts and network resources under a
  745. single domain name and security boundary. A workgroup is a more basic
  746. grouping, intended only to help users find objects such as printers
  747. and shared folders within that group. Domains are the recommended
  748. choice for all networks except very small ones with few users.
  749. In a workgroup, users might have to remember multiple passwords, one
  750. for each network resource. (In addition, different users can use
  751. different passwords for each resource.) In a domain, passwords and
  752. permissions are simpler to keep track of because a domain has a single,
  753. centralized database of user accounts, permissions, and other network
  754. details. The information in this database is replicated automatically
  755. among domain controllers. You determine which servers are domain
  756. controllers and which are simply members of the domain. You can
  757. determine these roles not only during Setup but afterward.
  758. Domains, and the Active Directory directory system of which they are
  759. a part, provide many options for making resources easily available to
  760. users while maintaining good monitoring and security. For more
  761. information about Active Directory, see Whistler Help and Support. To
  762. open Help and Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start,
  763. and then click Help and Support.
  764. 13.1 Planning for Domain Controllers and Member Servers
  765. ======================================================================
  766. With Whistler, servers in a domain can have one of two roles: domain
  767. controllers, which contain matching copies of the user accounts and
  768. other Active Directory data in a given domain, and member servers,
  769. which belong to a domain but do not contain a copy of the Active
  770. Directory data. (A server that belongs to a workgroup, not a domain,
  771. is called a stand-alone server.) With Whistler, it is possible to
  772. change the role of a server back and forth from domain controller to
  773. member server (or stand-alone server), even after Setup is complete.
  774. However, you should plan your domain before running
  775. Setup, and change server roles only when necessary.
  776. It is a good idea to give careful thought to the names of your domain
  777. controllers before running Setup. You cannot change the name of a
  778. server while it is a domain controller. Instead, you must change the domain controller to a member or stand-alone server, change the name,
  779. and finally make the server a domain controller once again.
  780. If you have multiple domain controllers, it provides better support
  781. for users than having only one. Multiple domain controllers provide
  782. automatic backup for user accounts and other Active Directory data,
  783. and they work together to support domain controller functions (such as
  784. carrying out logon validations). For more information about domain controllers,
  785. see the topics under Active Directory in Whistler
  786. Help and Support Services. To open Help and Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start, and then click Help and Support.
  787. 13.1.1 Special Aspects of Whistler Domain Controllers
  788. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
  789. As you manage your Whistler domains, you might want to learn more
  790. about operations master roles. This section describes operations
  791. master roles briefly. For more information about operations master
  792. roles, see Whistler Help and Support Services. To open Help and
  793. Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start, and then click
  794. Help and Support.
  795. Operations master roles are special roles assigned to one or more
  796. domain controllers in an Active Directory domain. The domain
  797. controllers assigned to these roles perform operations that are
  798. single-master (not permitted to occur at different places in a network
  799. at the same time). For example, the creation of security identifiers
  800. for new resources (such as new computers) must be overseen by a single
  801. domain controller to ensure that the identifiers are unique.
  802. The first domain controller installed in a domain is automatically
  803. assigned all the operations master roles. You can change the
  804. assignment of operations master roles after Setup, but in most cases
  805. this will not be necessary. You will need to be particularly aware of
  806. operations masters roles if problems develop on an operations master
  807. or if you plan to take one out of service. For more information about
  808. operations master roles, which are part of Active Directory, see
  809. Whistler Help and Support Services. To open Help and Support Services, after completing Setup, click Start, and then click Help and Support.
