186. Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Support Tools

187.
Important
It is highly recommended that you remove all
188. previous versions of Support Tools, including beta versions of the Windows
189. Support Tools for Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Windows XP
190. 64-Bit Edition, before running the Support Tools installation program.

If
191. the Setup program finds an older version of Support Tools, it opens a dialog box
192. with Add/Remove and Remove all (default) options. If you select
193. Remove all, Setup automatically uninstalls Support Tools. If you select
194. Add/Remove, you can manually uninstall Support Tools.

195.

196.
Start Windows XP Professional or Windows XP 64-Bit Edition, and
197. then insert the Windows XP Professional or Windows XP 64-Bit Edition

199.
Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

200.
Note
In the unlikely event that your computer pauses
201. for a few minutes during installation while the Setup window is displaying
202. "publishing product information," please be patient. The Setup program will
203. continue shortly and will finish installing the Support Tools.

204.
The Setup program installs Windows Support Tools files onto your hard disk. A
205. typical installation requires 4 megabytes (MB) of free space.

206.
As it installs the Support Tools, Setup:

207.

208.
Creates a Windows Support Tools folder within the Program
209. Files folder on the Start menu, which contains a shortcut to the
210. Windows Support Tools Help. From there you can access the online documentation
211. and launch tools.
212.
Adds the \Program Files\Support Tools directory (or the directory name you
213. choose for installing the tools) to your computer's hard drive.
214.
Appends the \Program Files\Support Tools directory to your computer's PATH
215. statement. This enables you to run an installed Support Tool from a command
216. prompt within any folder on the hard drive without specifying the path to the
217. Support Tools folder.

218.
Some tools require separate or additional setup besides the steps described
219. earlier. For more information about each of these tools and others with
220. additional requirements, as well as a complete list of the tools, see the online
221. Help file (Suptools.chm).

222.
Note
On the Windows XP
223. Professional and Windows XP 64-Bit Edition CDs, most tools are compressed
224. into cabinet (.cab) files. You cannot run executable files, call other binaries,
225. or open documentation directly from .cab files. Before you run a tool that you
226. have not installed by using the Support Tools Setup, you must first extract all
227. executable files and dependencies for a tool from the .cab file on the CD to
228. your hard drive.

Be aware also that for some tools, the Support Tools
229. Setup or the tool's own Setup program performs other installation procedures,
230. such as making changes in the registry. You might not be able to run these tools
231. even if you extract all their files from the .cab; first install them with the
232. Support Tools Setup or the tool's own Setup program.
