  24. 1. Monitoring Fax Transmissions and Answering Calls Manually
  25. ----------------------------------------------------------
  26. This release of Microsoft Personal Fax for Windows includes
  27. Fax Monitor and an option to answer calls manually. You can
  28. use Fax Monitor to see the current status of Personal Fax, to
  29. interrupt calls, and to turn off manual answering for the next
  30. call. The options for Fax Monitor are controlled on the Monitor tab
  31. in the Fax Properties dialog box, where you can set options to
  32. do the following.
  33. * Use an icon on the taskbar to display Fax Monitor or
  34. its options
  35. * Display Fax Monitor automatically when you send or
  36. receive a fax
  37. * Display Fax Monitor on top of all other windows
  38. * Play a sound when you receive a fax
  39. * Turn on Manual Answer
  40. >>> To change settings for Fax Monitor
  41. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
  42. double-click Fax.
  43. 2. Click the Monitor tab.
  44. 3. Select the options you want.
  45. If your phone line is used for both fax and voice calls, enabling
  46. Manual Answer lets you choose to answer calls manually. If you
  47. receive a phone call while this feature is turned on, Personal Fax
  48. prompts you to answer the call. After you answer and find that the
  49. call is a fax call, you can click Yes to receive the fax.
  50. >>> To turn on Manual Answer
  51. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
  52. double-click Fax.
  53. 2. Click the Monitor tab.
  54. 3. Select the Enable Manual Answer check box.
  55. When you know in advance that the next call will be a fax call,
  56. you can set Personal Fax to ignore Manual Answer for that call only.
  57. >>> To turn off Manual Answer for the next call
  58. 1. On the taskbar, click the Fax icon.
  59. 2. In Fax Monitor, select the Answer Next Call check box.
  60. ----------------------------------------------------------
  61. 2. Setting the Number of Rings Before Answering
  62. ----------------------------------------------------------
  63. With this release, you can now specify how many rings you
  64. want before Personal Fax answers a call.
  65. >>> To set the number of rings before answering
  66. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
  67. double-click Fax.
  68. 2. Click the Receive tab.
  69. 3. In Rings Before Answer, type the number of rings you want.
  70. Note: When the Manual Answer check box is selected on the
  71. Monitor tab in the Fax Properties dialog box, the number of rings
  72. is automatically set to 99.
  73. ----------------------------------------------------------
  74. 3. Using the Same Modem for a Remote Access Server and
  75. for Faxing
  76. ----------------------------------------------------------
  77. You can use the same modem for both a Remote Access
  78. Server (RAS) and for fax transmissions as long as the modem
  79. supports a feature called "adaptive answer." If your modem
  80. doesn't support adaptive answer, you can still use the same
  81. modem for outgoing RAS and fax transmissions. You won't,
  82. however, be able to receive both faxes and dial-in RAS calls.
  83. To receive dial-in RAS calls on a non-adaptive-answer modem,
  84. you need to disable your modem for fax receipt.
  85. >>> To disable your modem for fax receipt
  86. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
  87. double-click Fax.
  88. 2. Click the Receive tab.
  89. 3. Under Device Name, click to clear the check box next to
  90. the name of your modem.
  91. ----------------------------------------------------------
  92. 4. If You've Changed Your Fax Administrator Account Password
  93. ----------------------------------------------------------
  94. If you've changed the password for your Fax Administrator
  95. account (the account specified during Setup), you will also need
  96. to change the password for your Fax Service so that the two
  97. passwords match.
  98. >>> To change your Fax Service password
  99. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
  100. double-click Services.
  101. 2. Under Services, click Microsoft Fax Service, and then click
  102. the Startup button.
  103. 3. Under Log On As, type the new password in the Password box.
  104. 4. Type the new password again in the Confirm Password box.
  105. 5. Click OK in each dialog box.
  106. ----------------------------------------------------------
  107. 5. Turning Off Print Spooler Event Logging for Fax Events
  108. ----------------------------------------------------------
  109. If you prefer not to log print spooler fax events, you can turn off
  110. this option by disabling print system event logging. Please note that
  111. doing so will also disable all events logged by the print spooler.
  112. >>> To disable print system event logging
  113. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  114. 2. On the File menu, click Server Properties.
  115. 3. Click the Advanced tab.
  116. 4. Click to clear the check box next to Log spooler
  117. information events.
  118. ----------------------------------------------------------
  119. 6. If You Receive a "Could Not Process All Attachments" Message
  120. ----------------------------------------------------------
  121. This message appears after sending a fax from Windows
  122. Messaging when you've attached a file from a program that
  123. doesn't support file attachments.
  124. To fax a file from a program that doesn't support file
  125. attachments when faxing from Windows Messaging, send the
  126. file from the program directly.
  127. >>> To fax a file from a program
  128. 1. In the program, select your fax printer as the target
  129. printer.
  130. 2. On the File menu, click Print or Send.
  131. 3. Follow the instructions in the Fax Send Utility.
  132. ----------------------------------------------------------
  133. 7. If You Can't Send a Fax After Replacing or Reinstalling Your Modem
  134. ----------------------------------------------------------
  135. If you have problems faxing after replacing or reinstalling your
  136. modem, restart Windows NT 4.0. If that doesn't clear up the
  137. problem, reinstall Personal Fax for Windows.
  138. ----------------------------------------------------------
  139. 8. If Windows Messaging Stops Responding After You've Installed
  140. Personal Fax for Windows
  141. ----------------------------------------------------------
  142. If, after installing Personal Fax, Windows Messaging does
  143. nothing when you try to open it, restart Windows NT 4.0, and then,
  144. do the following.
  145. 1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
  146. double-click Mail.
  147. 2. Click Show Profiles.
  148. 3. Click the profile that you specified during fax Setup, and
  149. then click Properties.
  150. 4. Select Fax Mail Transport, and then click Remove.
  151. You will be able to open Windows Messaging, but you won't
  152. be able to send faxes from it. Instead, you can send faxes by
  153. using the Send Fax Utility or by faxing documents directly from
  154. their programs.
  155. ----------------------------------------------------------
  156. 9. If You Don't Receive an Expected Fax
  157. ----------------------------------------------------------
  158. There are two possible reasons you may not receive an
  159. expected fax.
  160. 1. The destination printer, folder, or inbox specified on the
  161. Receive tab in the Fax Properties dialog box is unavailable.
  162. This generates the NT Fax event "The device is not ready."
  163. To receive the fax, make the destination available, and
  164. the fax normally will be delivered after 10 or 20 minutes.
  165. If the destination cannot be made available, specify a
  166. different destination on the Receive tab in the Fax Properties
  167. dialog box, cancel the document in the printer queue, and
  168. have the fax resent.
  169. 2. The drive where your Windows NT system files reside is at
  170. or near capacity. The Fax Service will attempt to answer an
  171. incoming fax, but will immediately stop. The fax won't be
  172. received and no event will be generated.
  173. To resume receiving faxes, delete some files to free up space,
  174. and then have the fax resent.
  175. ----------------------------------------------------------
  176. 10. If the Paste Command Is Unavailable in Cover Page Editor
  177. ----------------------------------------------------------
  178. Cover Page Editor allows one Note field for each cover page.
  179. If you try to copy and paste a second Note field into a cover
  180. page, the Paste command will be unavailable. To paste a Note
  181. field into a cover page, select the one already in the cover page,
  182. and then delete it. The Paste command will become available.
  183. ----------------------------------------------------------
  184. 11. If You Don't Receive Fax Status E-mail when Using the Send Fax Utility or
  185. Faxing from a Program
  186. ----------------------------------------------------------
  187. For this release, fax status e-mail is sent only when you send a
  188. fax by using Windows Messaging. To view the progress of a fax
  189. transmission or to learn the status of recent fax transmissions,
  190. you can use Fax Monitor (see release note 1). To find out if
  191. you've received a fax, you can also check the destination you
  192. set up for receiving faxes, such as a certain folder or printer.
  193. For complete information about fax events, you can use the
  194. Windows NT Event Viewer.
  195. >>> To view details of fax events in Event Viewer
  196. 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative
  197. Tools (Common), and then click Event Viewer.
  198. 2. On the Log menu, click Application.
  199. 3. Under Source, look for NT Fax events.
  200. 4. Double-click an event to see a complete description.
  201. ----------------------------------------------------------
  202. 12. To Report Bugs
  203. ----------------------------------------------------------
  204. You can report bugs by filling out the Problem Reporting Form
  205. included in this release.
  206. >>> To use the Problem Reporting Form
  207. 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Fax (Common),
  208. and then click Problem Reporting Form.
  209. 2. Fill out the form, and then e-mail it to [email protected]
